Located in the Valley of Mexico also called the Valley of Anáhuac, near the southern end of the plateau of Anáhuac, at an altitude of c.7, 800 ft (2,380 m) at the center of Mexico, the Mexican capital was originally built by the Aztecs in 1325 on an island of Lake Texcoco. Today’s Mexico City is the commercial, industrial, financial, political, and cultural center of Mexico.
Offering year around mild weather, never too hot, never too cold, Mexico City is a wonderful destination with a wide range of tourist attractions. Centro Historico (historic city center) is the place best known for wonderful architecture and museums. The area is the major tourist attraction. Some of the attractions include Plaza de la Constitucion or Zocalo, Palacio Nacional, Cathedral, Sagrario Metropolitano, Nacional Monte de Piedad, City Hall, Aztec Ruins of Templo Mayor, Museo Nacional de Arte, Museo Franz Mayer, Museo del Templo Mayor, and Museo Postal.
Home to Museum of Modern Art, National Anthropological Museum, Chapultepec Castle, Chapultepec Forest, the zoo, and many other touristy attractions, Chapultepec – Lomas, located centrally, is the major hotel zone of the city. Polanco, a district of Mexico City, is one of the wealthiest residential areas of the City with the most expensive boutique stores. Zona Rosa, a business and entertainment district, is a major tourist trap; some of the attractions include Angel de la Independencia, Torre Mayor, Paseo de la Reforma, Fuente de la Diana Cazadora, Statue of Cuauhtemoc, and Monumento a la Madre.
Offering a plenty of trendy restaurants, bistros, clubs, pubs and shops, Condesa and Roma is the Mexican version of SoHo in the center of the city. San Angel, located south of the city, is widely known for its cobblestone streets, historic center and trendy shopping and restaurant area. To the south of the Mexico City, Xochimilco is a great tourist attraction offering the last remnant of what Mexico City was when the Spanish arrived, an area full of canals and an important flower-growing neighborhood south of the city. Located south of the city, Coyoacán is home of the University City. Santa Fe is an important financial and business district to the northwest of the city. Some of the other attractions of Mexico City include Del Valle and Narvarte, Tlalpan and Pedregal, and Ciudad Satelite.
The major air gateway to the Mexico City is the Benito Juárez International Airport, located in the eastern part of the city. The City can also be accessed thru Licenciado Adolfo López Mateos International Airport, located in the City of Toluca 50 kilometers northwest of the city.
